HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both teams traded five points apiece, the Leopards broke the 5-5 tie with a 6-1 run led by a kill apiece from freshmen Alex McLane (Columbus, Ohio) and Tristan McDonough (Shelton, Conn.). Regis pulled within three points after a service ace from Marcello Cappuccio, but Wentworth then built a 17-11 lead starting with a block from freshman Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.) and sophomore Drew Potter (Towson, Md.) which forced a Regis timeout. Regis got one back from a WIT attack error, but the Leopards left no room for error and scored the final seven points, highlighted by back-to-back blocks from David Marsh (Springfield, Mass.) and McDonough.
  • Wentworth pulled away after the opening 10 points in the middle set with sophomore Drew Hesse (Eden, N.Y.) on the serve. Hesse served two aces and combined with a point apiece from Stockton and Potter, forcing Regis to take a timeout after a Pride attack error. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – STATISTICAL LEADERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nichols gave Wentworth trouble in the opening two sets, and took an 8-4 lead capped by a service ace from Ryan Wang. The Leopards chipped away at the deficit and dug out of the hole on a 4-0 run in the middle of the set with freshman Hunter Oshman (Pennington, N.J.) on the serve, highlighted by back-to-back aces. A quick two points from Nichols tied the set 14-14, and again at 15-15, before Wentworth brought the gap to two with an ace from Ian Carlson (Parker, Colo.). Nichols would later close the gap with a 3-1 run and a kill by Lance Law, as the scored read 19-19 forcing a Wentworth timeout. Senior Ryan Engel (Floral Park, N.Y.) started a 3-0 spurt for Wentworth, ending on a block from Oshman and Carlson, for the 22-19 lead, before the Leopards scored the final three of five points to seal the first set by a narrow 25-22 score.
  • Roles reversed in the middle set, as Love finished a pass from Augusto Rodriguez-Guerrios (San Juan, Puerto Rico) for an 8-4 advantage. Nichols responded with a 7-4 run, pulling with a single point at 12-11, and ultimately tied the match 19-19 after a kill from Wang, forcing a Wentworth timeout. The Leopards drew first blood out of the break with a kill from Engel, and a solo block from Ian Carlson brought the lead up to two, 22-20. Nichols continued to knock on the back door, and responded with two points of their own, tying the set again at 22-22 and 23-23. A service error from Nichols gave Wentworth match-point opportunity, as junior Sean Spencer (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) solo blocked the over-pass and gave WIT a 2-0 match lead.
  • Wentworth settled in in the third set and hit .500 with 16 kills and three errors on 26 swings. The Leopards pulled away in the middle of the set with Engel on the serve, who used an ace and two kills from Love to lead 18-11. Wentworth closed the second match of the day on a 6-1 run for the 25-13 final.
