Hopkins, Robbins Lead Cross Country in Season Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth men's cross country team kicked off its fourth season of varsity competition with a race against Brandeis and Regis, held at the Nehoiden Golf Course. The Leopards – behind a first-place finish from senior Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) and a second-place finish from classmate Alex Robbins (Mansfield, Mass.) – placed second with 36 points, 11 behind Brandeis (25) and 42 ahead of Regis (78).

Hopkins ran the five-kilometer race in a time of 16:18.9, followed by Robbins' 16:26.9. Junior Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) was 12th to pick up 10 points with a time of 17:14.2 while sophomore Tom Caruso (Mahopac, N.Y.) was 14th, picking up 11 points after finishing with a time of 17:23.3. Freshman Davio DeLuca (Nottingham, N.H.) was the fifth Wentworth runner to finish, picking up 12 points after a 19th-place finish with a time of 17:43.9.

Senior Zach Howey (Sherwood, Ark.) placed 25th with a time of 18:00.9, followed by freshman Anthony Maida's (Peabody, Mass.) 28th-place time of 18:13.9. Four Leopards all crossed the line within 52 seconds of each other as freshmen Tyler Cosma (Center Moriches, N.Y.) and Wes Brimeyer (Dubuque, Iowa) finished with times of 18:29.8, freshman Will Allen (West Hartford, Conn.) was 32nd (19:16.9, and junior Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine) was 33rd with a time of 19:21.9.

Junior Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) placed 36th with a time of 20:31.9, followed by senior Clay Harman's (Broad Brook, Conn.) 37th-place finish (20:32.3). Freshman Rob Moran (Billerica, Mass.) was 38th in a time of 20:40.3.

Sophomore Samantha Madden (Plainville, Mass.) placed 37th in the women's race with a time of 29:41.

Wentworth is at the University of New England Invitational on September 9.
