Men's Cross Country Takes Second at UNE Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's cross country team took second place at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Rotary Park.

"Today was a good starting point for the team. We have a lot to improve on before the end of the season, but we have plenty of time," commented head coach Dan Roark. "It's always encouraging to see the guys run fast early in the season, yet they are still hungry for more."

The Leopards placed second overall in their first 8K race of the season, collecting 67 points, while host UNE took first place with 20 points.

Senior Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) led the way for the Leopards, and placed fourth overall at 27:45.4. Junior Tom Caruso (Mahopac, N.Y.) followed just behind in fifth place, running a personal-best time of 27:52.5.

Sophomore Tyler Cosma (Center Moriches, N.Y.) and Will Allen (West Hartford, Conn.) finished next for the Leopards with neck-and-neck times of 29:19.8 and 29:29.4, respectively. Allen ran 14 seconds faster than last year's 8K, marking a personal-best on the afternoon.  Sophomore Wes Brimeyer (Dubuque, Iowa) also notched a PR, and crossed the line at 30:58.6, a minute faster than his previous record.

Last meet's freshman hero Alexander Foote (North Easton, Mass.) ran his first collegiate 8K in 31:33.3, while senior Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) rounded out the meet for Wentworth at 32:15.8.

The Leopards return to action on Saturday, September 22 at the Pop Crowell Invitational hosted by Gordon College.
