Softball Rallies to Defeat Emmanuel, 3-2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore catcher Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team past Emmanuel College, 3-2, Monday afternoon in Day 2 action of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The win was the first of the year for the Leopards who improve to 1-2 while the Saints drop to 1-3 with the loss.

EC would strike first with a run in the second inning to take the first lead of the afternoon. Sophomore right fielder Alex Bressette (North Easton, Mass.) reached with a two-out single to centerfield and advanced to second on a Leopard miscue to put a runner in scoring position. The error would prove to be costly as Bressette would score on an RBI single by freshman centerfielder Marianne Halas (Lynn, Mass.) to give Emmanuel the 1-0 cushion.

The Saints would make it 2-0 with a run in the fourth when freshman shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) led off with a double to right-center and came around to score on a sac-fly by senior first baseman Kelly Lloid (Issaquah, Wash.). The Leopards would answer with a run in the bottom half of the frame as Galvin drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by freshman third baseman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) to cut the lead to 2-1.

Glavin would deliver the big blow in the bottom of the sixth inning, connecting on a one-out two-run line drive home run over the centerfield fence, plating sophomore shortstop Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) to give Wentworth its first lead of the day at 3-2 heading into the final frame.

Rookie pitcher Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine.) earned the win on the mound for WIT, going the distance and allowing just two runs (one earned on four hits while striking out two. Her counterpart, freshman Val Kiers (West Warwick, R.I.) was equally as impressive for Emmanuel, tossing six innings of five hit ball and allowing three runs while striking out six.

The Saints are idle tomorrow and return to action on Wednesday when they take on Keystone College at 9:30 a.m. while Wentworth is back in action tomorrow afternoon against Hilbert College at 1:30 p.m.
