Softball Splits Two Games

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) had three hits and drove in what proved to be the game-winning run, while classmate Erin McKinnon (Berlin, Conn.) added three hits of her own as the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team defeated Cazenovia, 3-1, in their first game of the day before falling to Bay Path, 9-0 (five innings) in the team's second contest of the day.

Against Cazenovia, the Leopards would get all the runs they would need in the third when McKinnon led off with a single and went to second when sophomore Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a single off the bat of sophomore Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.). Curran, who went to third on Glavin's hit, scored on Sawyer's double before Glavin scored on a double from junior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.).

Making just her second career start, sophomore Anna Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) had an impressive outing in the circle, allowing just one run. Freshman Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine) earned her first career save after holding the Wildcats scoreless in the final inning and a third of work.

For the second time this week, Bay Path defeated the Leopards. The Wildcats scored two runs early and broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Wentworth was held to just two hits, coming off the bats of Curran and sophomore Kelley Sawchuk (Westerly, R.I.), and Lee took the loss for the Leopards.

The Black & Gold (2-4) continues their trip on Thursday, facing NAIA member Cumberlands at 9:30 a.m. before battling Baptist Bible at 11:30.
