Softball Sweeps Maine-Presque Isle

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomores Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) and Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) each had three hits in the first game while classmate Anna Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) pitched a no-hitter in the nightcap as the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 8-2 and 12-4.

The Leopards plated three runs in the first inning of the opener as Curran doubled home freshman Erin McKinnon (Berlin, Conn.), who had a one-out single, and scored when Glavin launched her third home run of the season.

Wentworth increased its lead to 5-0 in the third when Curran scored after freshman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, Mass.) reached on an error and Glavin scored on a wild pitch.

The Owls got on the board in the top of the fourth when sophomore Whitney Donovan (Ashland, Maine) singled home junior Brittany Leutjen (Hampden, Maine).

In the bottom of the fifth the Leopards took an 8-1 lead as Glavin singled home Curran, Sawyer singled home Glavin and would score on an error. Maine-Presque Isle scored in the top of the seventh when freshman Jessica Campbell (Lisbon, Maine) scored on an error.

Glavin was 3-for-3 (including a double and a home run) with three RBI and three runs scored. Curran had a single, double, and a triple in her four times at bat and scored three times. Fresman Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine) picked up the win as she allowed two runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out two.

Leutjen had two hits for the Owls while junior Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) took the loss in the circle. Coffin allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits, walked three and struck out six.

Game two saw the Owls take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Kellie Peers (Casewell, Maine) led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on an illegal pitch call on Wahlstrom. The Owls scored two more in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead when Peers scored Donovan on a sacrifice fly and Leutjen drew a bases-loaded walk.

Wentworth tied the game in the home half of the second as junior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) singled in Sawyer, who led off the inning with a walk and who would come around to score on an RBI single from sophomore Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.). The third Leopard run came when McKinnon reached on a fielder's choice, which scored sophomore Kelley Shawchuk (Westerly, R.I.).

After the Owls took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third when freshman Taylor Cochran (Topsfield, Maine) scored on a wild pitch, Wentworth scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Sawyer scored on an error and junior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) and Mochi each scored on wild pitches.

Wentworth scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings when Sawyer had an RBI single in the fourth and sophomore Angie Rodriguez (Boston, Mass.) scored on an error in the fifth. The Leopards ended the game with four runs in the sixth, including Sawyer scoring when Shawchuk reached on an error, Doherty plating Shawcuk on a sacrifice fly, and McKinnon delivering an RBI single.

Wahlstrom (2-3) gave up four runs, scattered 10 walks, and struck out four for her first career no-hitter. At the plate, Sawyer and Bacik each had a pair of hits while Doherty and McKinnon drove in two runs apiece.

For the Owls, Peers, freshman Amanda Allen (Limestone, Maine), and Leutjen drew two walks apiece. Allen took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on two hits, walking six, and striking out one in 2.2 innings of work. Donovan allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits, walked three and struck out three in 2.2 innings of work.

Wentworth snaps a six-game losing streak, improving to 4-9 on the season. The Leopards are at Roger Williams on Friday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill. Maine-Presque Isle dropped its first two games of the season and is at Daniel Webster, also on Friday.
