Offensive Outburst Lifts Softball to Two Wins

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore Liz Glavin (Ipswich, MA) rapped out five hits, including three home runs and knocked in 12 runs to lead the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team to a doubleheader sweep over host Wheelock College this afternoon at the Pine Manor College Softball Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Leopards took the first game in five innings, 21-1, and the nightcap, 17-6, also in five innings due the eight-run mercy rule.  The Leopards improve to 6-17 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-11.

Glavin went 3-4 with a grand slam homer and a three-run blast in consecutive innings in the opening contest as part of a school-record nine-RBI effort for Wentworth.  Glavin topped the former RBI mark on seven set by Caylee Johanson on March 31, 2009.  She capped her day by going 2-3 with three runs batted in, including a two-run homer in the second contest.

The Leopards scored six times in the first frame of the opening game, keyed by a two-run single by sophomore center fielder Devin Doherty (Bridgewater, MA) and RBI walks drawn by sophomore second baseman Anna Wahlstrom (Quincy, MA) and freshman pitcher Kate Lee (Spruce Head, ME).  Wentworth added six more runs in the third to take a 12-0 advantage, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Glavin and run-scoring walks worked by Doherty, sophomore left fielder Angie Rodriguez (Boston, MA/O'Bryant HS) and sophomore shortstop Sam Curran (Quincy, MA).

Wheelock cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the third when senior first baseman Jacky Hull (Braintree, MA) led off with a single and later came around to score on an error to make it 12-1.  The Leopards increased their lead to 17-1 with five runs in the fourth, including four on the Gavin grand slam.  Wentworth scored four times in the fifth for the final runs of the contest to take a 21-1 lead.  Curran singled home a run and Gavin plated three runners with her second long ball of the game.

Lee (3-10) earned the victory allowing an unearned run on seven hits and a walk, while striking out four in five innings for the Leopards.  Freshman Kiersten Cosgrove (Pequannock, NJ) (0-6) suffered the loss for the Wildcats, giving up 12 runs (seven earned) on two hits and 12 walks, while fanning a batter in three innings of work.

Glavin wasted no time giving Wentworth a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second contest with a two-run homer to give her three blasts on the day and a team-leading six for the season.  The Leopards sent 16 batters to the plate in the second and scored 10 runs to establish a 12-0 cushion.  A two-run single from Wahlstrom, an RBI base knock from Doherty and RBI walks drawn by Curran, Glavin, junior first baseman Haylee Bacik (Lowell, MA) and Rodriguez fueled the Wentworth offense during the inning.  Wheelock answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, keyed by a pair of two-run singles from sophomore second baseman Becca House (Middlebury, CT) and Cosgrove to cut the deficit to 12-5.  The Wildcats tacked on another run in the fourth when Cosgrove smacked a two-out single, moved to third on the pair of wild pitches and raced home on a run-scoring single from senior Kim Perault (Medford, MA) to pull the home team to within 12-6.  It would be as close as they would come as the Leopards crossed the plate five times in the fifth to take a 17-6 lead.  Curran smashed a two-run homer to center and freshman third baseman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, NY) laced an RBI single to pace the visitors in the inning.

Lee picked up her second victory of the day to improve to 4-10 after yielding six runs (four earned) on 11 hits, while setting down four batters on strikes in five frames for Wentworth, while Cosgrove gave up 17 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits and 13 bases on balls in four innings for Wheelock.

Doherty finished the day going 4-7 with six RBI for the Leopards, while Wahlstrom was 4-5 with three RBI and five runs scored.  Curran drove in five runs and also scored five times in addition to collecting a pair of hits.  Freshman Felicia Baptista (Stoughton, MA) and Hull each led the Wildcats with four hits apiece, while Perault and freshman Kayla Grosso (Barnstable, MA) collected three hits each.

The Wildcats will be in action again tomorrow when they take on Pine Manor at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader in Chestnut Hill, while Wentworth returns to action on April 13, hosting Endicott College for a noon twinbill.
