Softball Sees Season Come to a Close

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) went 4-for-6 with five runs scored and four RBI while picking up a pair of wins in the circle as the Eastern Nazarene softball team swept Wentworth, 9-0 and 15-4 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Carr Diamond.

Both Sorensen and Leopard freshman Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine) had a pitcher's duel going for the first three innings of the opener before the Lions got all the runs they would need in a four-run fourth inning. Senior Jamie Block (Pembroke, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly, Sorensen, who had reached on an infield single, scored on an error, and sophomore Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.) delivered a two-run home run.

An inning later Eastern Nazarene scored five times with junior Sam Losano (Elverta, Calif.), junior Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.), and Block having RBI singles and freshman Britny Costa (New Bedford, Mass.) delivering a two-run single.

Sorenson faced one batter over the minimum, an infield bunt single from sophomore Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.), before retiring the final 14 batters she faced to pick up the win. She also finished with five strikeouts. She helped her cause at the plate with a pair of hits, while Losano and Moore also had two hits.

Lee took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, walking one and striking out one.

Game two saw Wentworth take a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to sophomore Liz Glavin's (Ipswich, Mass.) three-run home run and an RBI ground-rule double from junior Haylee Bacik, which scored freshman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.).

The Lions used a five-run second to take a 5-4 lead as freshman Sterling Marino (North Kingstown, R.I.), Moore, Block, and junior Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) each drew bases-loaded walks and freshman Krystal Holl (Hagerstown, Md.) scored on a wild pitch.

Eastern Nazarene scored four times in the fourth, thanks in part to a Clinkscale RBI triple and a Marino RBI single, and took advantage to two Wentworth errors in the fifth to extend their lead to 11-4. Sorenson blasted a grand slam to left in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Sorensen came on in relief to pick up the win (7-9), allowing three hits and one walk while striking out nine in 5.2 innings of work. At the plate she was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Marino and Clinkscale drove in two runs apiece.

Sophomore Anna Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss as she allowed five runs on zero hits and walked six in 1.2 innings of work. Lee pitched the final 4.1 innings. Sawyer was 3-for-3 and Glavin went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

With the wins Eaastern Nazarene snaps a nine-game losing streak and improves to 8-23 overall (5-11). The Lions close out the regular season on Wednesday against Nichols. Wentworth sees its season come to an end with a 6-27 (0-18) record.
