Softball Drops Pair to Open 2014 Campaign

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses at the Gene Cusic Classic. Wentworth was defeated by Elms, 8-0 (six innings), in its first game of the day before dropping a 14-1 decision to North Park in the Black & Gold's second game of the day.

Against Elms, the Blazers scored three times in the first inning to account for the only runs they would need. The game remained 3-0 until the third when Elms tacked on a run before scoring two in the fifth and sixth innings to round out the scoring.

Senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) had Wentworth's lone hit as she was 1-for-3 in the game. She also took the loss in the circle, striking out three and allowing four earned runs. Leopard batters struck out 15 times in the contest.

The second game of the day saw Wentworth take a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) scored after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game, stealing second, and scoring on an RBI single from sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.).

Wentworth's lead wouldn't last long as the Vikings scored seven times in the home half of the inning to take the lead. North Park upped its lead to 10-1 after two innings and 11-1 after three innings before scoring three times in the fourth to round out the scoring.

Junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) was saddled with the loss in her collegiate pitching debut. Curran, Sawyer, Glavin, and freshman Kendall Kelly (New Lebanon, N.Y.) had a hit apiece for the Leopards.

Wentworth (0-2) faces St. Mary's (Ind.) and Bridgewater State on Wednesday.
