Softball Suffers a Pair of Setbacks

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped a pair of contests on Wednesday as the Leopards were defeated by Saint Mary's (Ind.), 13-1, and 9-0 by Bridgewater State. With the two losses the Leopards stand at 0-4 on the young season.

After a scoreless first inning against Saint Mary's, the Leopards let up seven runs in the home half of the second inning, thanks in part to three Leopard errors. An inning later the Belles upped their lead to 10-0 with a three-run inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Leopards got on the board when junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) doubled home classmate Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.), who had struck out but reached on a throwing error. The Leopards left two runners in scoring position after three straight strikeouts.

Saint Mary's would round out the scoring with a three-run fourth to account for the 13-1 final.

Sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) had a pair of hits for the Black & Gold as she was 2-for-2. Glavin had Wentworth's other hit while senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) was tagged with the loss.

Bridgewater State jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one inning of play and tacked on a pair of runs an inning later to account for all of the scoring in the Leopards' second game of the day. Wentworth would leave a pair of runners on base in both the second and fifth innings but could not break through.

The Leopards were held to three hits on the day as Curran, senior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) and freshman Marina MacDonald-Soccorso (Avon, Conn.) recorded singles. Curran took the loss in the circle.

Wentworth concludes its spring trip on Thursday as the Leopards play Minnesota-Morris and Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.).
