BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College softball team took a pair of games from Wentworth Institute of Technology at Carr Diamond Wednesday afternoon as the Saints scored 32 runs on 25 hits in 11-0 and 21-4 wins.
In the opener, Emmanuel scored twice in the second on an RBI ground out by freshman Erin Walsh (Granby, Conn.) and an RBI triple from senior Julia Levins (Uxbridge, Mass.). The Saints added four more in the third when freshman Samantha Adams (Sanford, Maine) belted a grand slam and upped their lead to 7-0 in the fourth on an RBI double from sophomore Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.).
Emmanuel tacked on four in the fifth as senior Jennifer Garrity (Lynn, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly, Levins had an RBI double, freshman Brenna Gilmore (San Carlos, Calif.) had an RBI single, and Levins scored on a passed ball.
Levinwas 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Gilmore also had two hits. Adams had four RBI with her grand slam. Freshman Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) improved to 2-2 as she allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters.
Junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had Wentworth's lone hit while senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss.
Game two saw the Saints score five times in the top of the first as Garrity had an RBI double, freshman Susie Kieselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) had an RBI single, freshman Kara Madden (Silver Spring, Md.) and Levins drew bases-loaded walks, and Madden scored on an error.
The Leopards got two back in the home half of the inning as Curran and junior Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.) had back-to-back doubles. Grassetti went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Emmanuel made it an 8-2 game in the second when Madden delivered a two-run single and freshman Cassey LePage (Somerset, Mass.) scored on an error. An inning later the Saints broke the game open with a nine-run inning. Levins drove in four with an inside the park home run to help the offensive spark.
Wentworth scored a pair in the home half of the third when junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) belted her first home run of the season, which also scored Grassetti who drew a one-out walk.
The Saints completed the scoring with a four-run seventh.
Levins was 3-for-5 with five RBI, while Davis and Kieselback also had three hits apiece. Madden drove in four runs and was one of three players to score four times. Adams picked up the win (1-1) as she allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out six.
Curran, who was tagged with the loss, was 2-for-3 in the game, while Glavin drove in a pair of runs and Grassetti scored two runs.
Emmanuel (5-7) hosts Colby on Friday night while that afternoon Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play when the Leopards host Eastern Nazarene.
