BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) rapped out six hits and drove in six runs to lead Wentworth to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 23-5 in the opener and 17-6 in the nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.
In the first game, the Leopards set new program single-game records with 23 runs, 24 hits, and 20 RBI as the Leopards snapped a 20-game losing streak which dated back to last season.
The visiting Leopards (2-10) presented first-year Head Coach Caitlin Luquet with her first collegiate victories in the sweep, as Wentworth used a pair of seven-run rallies as part of a 24-hit attack in the opener before taking control of the nightcap with 13 tallies in their first two at-bats. Junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) and sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) joined Bacik with six hits each on the day for the winners, who also received four hits each from senior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) and junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) along with four RBI from Sawyer, junior Anne Harris (Germantown, Md.) and freshman Kendall Kelly (New Lebanon, N.Y.).
Freshman Maya Bloom (Hopkinton, N.H.) went the distance inside the circle in the opener to earn her first collegiate victory for the Leopards in fanning a pair, while Bacik collected the nightcap triumph for Wentworth in allowing one earned run and striking out 10 along the way.
Freshman Kristen O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in three runs in the season opening contests for the host Buccaneers (0-2), who also received a pair of hits and two RBI from junior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) as well as run-scoring singles off the bats of senior Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) and sophomore Brittany Driscoll (Sutton, Mass.).
Sophomore Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle in each contest for Massachusetts Maritime, as the duo combined for seven strikeouts on the day.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to Medford, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Fisher in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 5:30 p.m., while Wentworth hosts the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill on Tuesday afternoon in Boston beginning at 3:30 p.m.
