Hawks Pull Away From Softball

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams softball team scored 19 runs on 25 hits as the Hawks swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader from Wentworth Saturday afternoon at Carr Diamond. Roger Williams took the first game by an 11-2 final before completing the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

With the wins the Hawks run their win streak to four, improving to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in CCC play, while the Leopards slip to 4-22 (0-12).

Roger Williams scored in their first at bat as freshman Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a sacrifice by sophomore Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.).

An inning later the Hawks tallied six runs to take a 7-0 lead, with the big hit coming off the bat of Boulrisse, who had a two-run singles, which plated Moise and sophomore Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.). Moise had reached on a fielder's choice and Milano had singled.

Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the second when a fielder's choice from freshman Marina MacDonald Soccorso (Avon, Conn.) plated junior Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.). An inning later the hosts cut the lead to 7-2 on a sacrifice fly by senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.), which scored sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.).

The Hawks added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from junior Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) and scored three times in the sixth, with junior Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) hitting an RBI double, Peoples driving in a run with a single, and junior Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) had an RBI fielder's choice.

Sophomore Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) was 4-for-4, while Alicea, Peoples, Milano, and Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.) had two hits each. Peoples and Boulrisse drove in two runs apiece. Milano earned the win as she allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out two in five innings of work.

Junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had a pair of hits for the Leopards, while freshman Maya Bloom (Hopkinton, N.H.) took the loss in the circle.

Game two was scoreless through the first two innings before Roger Williams broke through with a run in the top of the third when freshman Caitlin Downes (Southington, Conn.) scored after freshman Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) reached on an error. An inning later the Hawks increased their lead to 3-0 after freshman Alexandrea Curioso (Pawcatuck, Conn.) scored on an errant pickoff attempt and Petrone had an RBI single.

Wentworth made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth as senior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) had an RBI single which scored Bacik, and freshman Lizzie Hauver (North Reading, Mass.), who came on as a pinch runner, scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks extended their lead to 7-2 with a four-run sixth, with Alicea delivering a two-run double and freshman Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) each delivering RBI singles.

Sophomore Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I. scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to round out the scoring.

Messier and Vesce each had two hits in the game, while Alicea drove in a pair of runs. Eight different players recorded at least one hit and Atkinson picked up the win in relief, allowing just two hits and a walk in 3.2 innings.

Curran, junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.), Bacik, and Mochi accounted for Wentworth's hits. Bacik took the loss, pitching the first three innings while Curran pitched the final four.

Roger Williams hosts Curry tomorrow while Wentworth hosts Wheelock on Tuesday.
