FORT MYERS, Fla., – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team opened the 2015 season with a pair of losses at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Leopards lost to Swarthmore 10-1 in six innings in the first game, and then fell to Rockford by a 6-4 score in their second game of the day.

Against Swarthmore, the Garnet scored three times in the first inning to account for the only runs they would need. Swarthmore tallied a pair of runs in the second, a run in the fourth and fifth innings, and finally three runs in the sixth.

Freshman Megan Berryman's (Middleboro, Mass.) RBI double to right in the fourth scored junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) for the lone Leopard run of the game. Glavin also doubled prior to being knock in for Wentworth's other hit of the game.

Junior Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) went five and two-thirds innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs with striking out two to take the loss for Wentworth.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of the second game, Wentworth scored four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) hit an RBI single to short to score Pinkston, who had led off the inning with a single up the middle. Senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) reached on a fielding error which would score freshman Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) and move Weymouth to third. Glavin gave Wentworth a 4-1 lead with a two-run single through the left side which scored both Weymouth and Curran.

Rockford made it a 4-2 game in the home half of the inning after a fielder's choice scored a run with runners at the corners and one out. The Regents tied the game in the fourth on a two-run home run from Ali Moore and took a 6-4 lead in the fifth, aided by a pair of Leopard errors.

Down to their final three outs, Curran led off with a single and went to third on consecutive groundouts. However, the Leopards could not muster a comeback as a groundout ended the contest.

Curran started in the circle for the Leopards, going four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and striking out a pair. Pinkston was tagged with the loss as she allowed a pair of unearned runs over the final two innings and struck out a batter.
