Salve Regina Takes Two From Softball

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.) went 5-for-6 with three runs, four RBI, and a pair of walks over the doubleheader, as the Salve Regina softball team swept Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon on Carr Diamond at Sweeney Field. The Seahawks took the first game 9-2 and won the second game 9-1 (five innings).

With the wins, Salve Regina stands at 4-8 (2-0 CCC) while the Leopards drop to 0-10 (0-4 CCC).

Wentworth, which was the designated away team for the doubleheader, started off the scoring with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Junior Heather Pinkston's (Concord, Calif.) infield single scored freshman Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) for the first run. Junior Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) hit a sac fly to left to score senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) to make it 2-0 for the Black and Gold.

Bukovsky led off the bottom of the first with a solo home-run. A single by Kara O'Riley (Acton, Mass.) scored junior Genevieve Benoit (Swampscott, Mass.) to make it 2-2 after one. Salve jumped on top in the next inning, scoring five runs off five hits to lead 7-2. A pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth wrapped up the scoring, giving Salve the 9-2 win.

Junior Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.) went the distance for the Seahawks, giving up four hits, two earned runs, while striking out 11. Curran gave up four earned runs off 11 hits in six innings of work. Bukovsky went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the offense.

Curran took the loss as she allowed four earned runs and scattered 11 hits.

After a scoreless top of the first in game two, the Seahawks jumped on top 2-0 after the first inning. Wentworth's lone run came in the top of the second after Pinkston scored on a wild pitch. Salve Regina tallied another pair of runs in the fourth thanks to a two run, ground-rule double by junior Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to make it 4-1. Salve's five runs off six hits in the bottom of the fifth ended the game, giving the Seahawks the 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) earned the win, giving up no hits in five innings with eight strikeouts. Benoit and Lexi Soucie had three hits each as part of a 15-hit attack.

Pinkston took the loss for the Leopards.

Wentworth continues CCC play on Wednesday as the Leopards host Curry at 3:30 p.m. Salve Regina travels to MIT on Tuesday.
