Softball Sweeps Wheelock to End Losing Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had five hits and picked up a pair of wins in the circle while classmate Liz Glavin collected five hits and drove in seven runs to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team pick up a pair of wins over Wheelock. The Leopards took the first game by a 13-1 final and won the nightcap, 17-9. Both wins came in five innings.

With the wins Wentworth snaps an 18-game losing streak, dating back to last season, and improves to 2-12 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 2-4.

The Leopards, who were the visiting team on the scoreboard, picked up a pair of runs in the first inning when Curran drew a one-out walk and scored on a Glavin double. Glavin, who went to third on an error, scored on a wild pitch. Wentworth tacked on five runs in the second with Glavin delivering an RBI single and, with the bases loaded, freshman Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) singled home a run with two more following on an error. Weymouth would score as a result of the second Wheelock miscue of the frame.

In the third inning the Leopards added three more to make it 10-0 as Curran tripled and came home on a Glavin double and Glavin, who would move to third on a Weymouth single, scored on an illegal pitch.

Wheelock scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third when senior Molly Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled in junior Katie Fleming (West Boylston, mass.), who drew a one-out walk and stole second.

The Leopards added a single run in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk from Glavin and scored two more times in the top of the fifth when junior Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) scored on an error and freshman Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) had an RBI single.

Curran picked up the win (1-5) after allowing one run on two hits and striking out five. At the plate she was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Glavin was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI, while junior Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) collected three hits. Weymouth had two hits as did freshman Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.).

Rose had both of Wheelock's hits with sophomore Vanessa Valenti (Woodstock, Conn.) picking up the loss.

Game two saw Wentworth take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with Berryman leading off the game being hit by a pitch and eventually coming home on an error off a double play attempt. Sawyer had an RBI single which scored Glavin, who had walked.

In the bottom of the inning the Wildcats send 14 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring nine times. Wheelock only had four hits in the inning, however were aided by a pair of Wentworth errors, drew four walks, and had a hit batter. Freshman Lacy Allen (Gloucester, Mass.) drove in two runs.

Wentworth chipped away at the deficit, scoring a pair of runs in the second when sophomore Marina MacDonald-Soccorso (Avon, Conn.) and Sabino each scored on wild pitches and the Leopards added a run in the third to make it 9-5 when Soccorso, who singled and went to third on an error, scored on a passed ball.

The fourth inning saw Wentworth send 14 batters to the plate and score 10 times to take a 15-9 lead. Curran led off with a single, stole second, and came home on Glavin's second home run of the season. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sabino reached on an error which would score two runs. Glavin would have an RBI triple, Curran would have an RBI double, and Sawyer would have an RBI single.

Wentworth rounded out the scoring in the fifth on a Berryman RBI triple and a Curran RBI single.

Curran came on with one out in the first inning and would allow one run on two hits in 4.2 innings of work to improve to 2-5. At the plate she was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI. MacDonald-Soccorso had three hits, while Berryman, Glavin, Weymouth, and Sawyer had two hits each. Glavin drove in three runs and Sawyer drove in a pair.

Sophomore Maggie Doyle took the loss for the Wildcats, who had five different players record hits.

Wentworth hosts Gordon tomorrow afternoon.
