Curry Takes Pair From Softball

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) went 5-for-8 to help the Curry College softball team earn a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon. The Colonels picked up a 6-4 win in game one and won, 14-1, in the nightcap.

Game One:  Curry 6, Wentworth 4
Scoreless through the first two innings, Curry scored three times in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Bruno led off with a double and went to third on a junior Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) bunt single. Bruno came into score on a sacrifice fly from junior Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.). Junior Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) singled and junior Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) followed with a walk to load the bases. Freshman Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to score Lynch and junior Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) grounded out which scored Oatway.

Wentworth cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Emily Winter (Stratford, Conn.). Rutkey scored when freshman Haley Hohlmaier (Johnston, R.I.) bunted her in.

The Colonels scored three times in the top of seventh with all three runs coming on home runs. Bruno led off with a shot to left center and Oatway hit a two-run home run to center which also scored freshman Molly Horn (Buzzards Bay, Mass.). The Leopards mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Libby White (Pittsfield, Mass.) led off with a single and went to third on a double by Rutkey. With one out Hohlmaier grounded out to score White and freshman Rebecca Wehrle (South Amboy, N.J.) singled to score Rutkey and advanced to second on an error. After an infield single from junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) moved Wehrle to third, junior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) singled to score Wehrle. A groundout would end the comeback bid.

Lambert improved to 3-2 on the year as she allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked two, and struck out two. Bruno and Oatway were both 3-for-4 in the game.

Sophomore Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits. Wehrle, Willcutt, and Rutkey each had two hits for the Leopards.

Game Two:  Curry 14, Wentworth 1 (5)
Curry scored four times in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead in the nightcap as Oatway drew a bases-loaded walk, junior Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.) had an RBI groundout, and Colleran drove in two runs with a double. Wentworth got a run back in the home half of the inning as Wehrle led off with a walk, went to second on a Weymouth single, went to third when Willcutt grounded out, and scored on a junior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) single.

The Colonels broke the game open in the second, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight times. Oatway and Byrd had RBI singles, Saluti and freshman Hanna Fleming (Clinton, Mass.) drew bases-loaded walks, sophomore Talia Forte (North Scituate, R.I.) had a two run single, Bruno had an RBI double, and Lambert drove in a run with a single.

Curry added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to round out the scoring when two runs scored after freshman Madeline Critch (Halifax, Mass.) reached on an error.

Junior Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) picked up the win (2-2) as she allowed one run and two hits in four innings. Senior McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Bruno, Lambert, and Colleran each had two hits.

Rutkey took the loss for the Leopards as she pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Norquist pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on six hits. Weymouth and Berryman had Wentworth's hits.

Wentworth (0-10, 0-4 CCC) is at Simmons on Wednesday while Curry (5-7, 2-0 CCC) hosts Salem State on Tuesday.
