Softball Suffers Two Losses to Gordon

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Laura Bieren (Groton, Mass.) had four hits and drove in a pair of runs and sophomore Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.) had three hits and four RBI as the Gordon College softball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Fighting Scots (7-1, 3-3 CCC) took the first game, 9-1, and won the nightcap, 11-3.

Game One:  Gordon 0, Wentworth 1 (5)
Gordon scored four times in the second inning, thanks in part to a pair of Wentworth errors. Senior Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.) had an RBI single, freshman Caitlin Catalanotto (Kingston, N.H.), who had reached on an error, scored when senior Katie Dariano (Albany, N.Y.) reached on an error. Jenkerson followed with a triple to right which scored Burkhart and Dariano.

The Fighting Scots added a run in the third when senior Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) scored after sophomore Rose Shannon (Ashland, Mass.) reached on an error.

Gordon added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 9-0. Jenkerson had a single and scored on an error and Petersen had an RBI single in the fourth while freshman Addy Gibney (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Bieren each had RBI singles in the fifth.

Wentworth scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-1. Junior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) started the inning by reaching on an error and with one out stole second. Berryman moved to third on a ground out and scored on an error.

Junior Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) picked up the win (1-5) as she allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out three. Jenkerson was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Sophomore Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) took the loss for the Black & Gold as she allowed seven unearned runs on five hits in four innings. Classmate Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) pitched the fifth inning. Freshman Rebecca Wehrle (South Amboy, N.J.) had Wentworth's lone hit.

Game Two:  Gordon 11, Wentworth 3
The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jenkerson, who led off the game with a walk, eventually came around to score on an error. Gordon added four runs in the third inning with junior Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) recording an RBI double, Shannon hitting a two-run home run, and Jenkerson driving in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Wentworth sliced the deficit to 5-2 in the home half of the inning. Wehrle led off with a single and stole second. Junior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) singled to drive in Wehrle and took second on the throw. Junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) reached on an error which would score Willcutt.

Gordon added two runs in the fourth inning as Kline had an RBI triple and Ryder scored her with a sacrifice fly. Wentworth got a run back in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from Wehrle to make it 7-3.

The Fighting Scots scored four times in the top of the fifth, including runs scoring on an RBI single from Jenkerson and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Lexy Haye (Wells, Maine).
