BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Hayley Arduini (Bolton, Mass.) had for hits and drove in eight runs to help the Endicott College softball team earn a Commonwealth Coast Conference sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at Carr Diamond. The Gulls took the first game, 15-0, and won in the nightcap, 10-1.
Game One: Endicott 15, Wentworth 0 (5 innings)
The Gulls did all of their damage in the second inning when they sent 17 batters to the plate. Arduini had an RBI double to give Endicott a 2-0 lead and in her second turn at the plate in the inning hit a grand slam to left center.
Endicott added two runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from freshman Peyton Atkins (Goshen, N.Y.) and an infield single from senior Lindsee Allienello (East Providence, R.I.) and scored one more in the fourth on an RBI single from freshman Rachel Usen (Bolton, Mass.)
Freshman Michaela Hamill (Lynn, Mass.) did not allow a hit until a senior Kelsey Gorski (Killingtowrth, Conn.) single in the fifth inning. Hamill walked three and struck out five to improve to 2-1. Arduini was 2-for-2 with five RBI while senior Julia McNeill (Smithtown, N.Y.) and senior Chrissy Gikas (Danvers, Mass.) each had two hits.
Sophomore Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) took the loss in 1.1 innings of work. Classmate Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) pitched the final 3.2 innings. In addition to Gorski's hit, junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.), junior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.), and freshman Haley Hohlmaier (Johnston, R.I.) each drew a walk.
Game Two: Endicott 10, Wentworth 1 (5 innings)
Endicott scored twice in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Arduini and when freshman Cassidy Dvorsky (Estero, Fla.) reached on an error. The Gulls added two runs in the second on an RBI single from junior Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) and an RBI double off the bat of junior Margaret Martzolf (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) before taking a 5-0 lead with an RBI double from sophomore Olivia Odermatt (Cheshire, Conn.).
Wentworth got on the board in the home half of the third inning as Gorski led off with a single and went to third on a double from Weymouth. Willcutt followed with a single to score Gorski and send Weymouth to third, however a strikeout and ground out would end the inning.
The Gulls scored five times in the fourth inning to break the game open, highlighted by a Arduini two-run double.
Junior Mikaela Mallozzi (Shelton, Conn.) picked up the win (1-0) as she allowed one run on six hits, walked one, and struck out four. Arduini was 2-for-2 with three RBI and freshman Maddie Connelly (Franklin, Mass.) also had two hits.
Rutkey picked up the loss while Norquist pitched the final four innings. Weymouth had a pair of hits.
Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Tuesday.
