Salve Regina Captures Two From Softball

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman Rebecca Wehrle (South Amboy, N.J.) collected a pair of hits as the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team was defeated by Salve Regina, 10-2, and 9-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday evening.

Game One:  Salve Regina 10, Wentworth 2 (5)
Salve Regina did all of its damage in the first two innings as the Seahawks scored four times in the first frame and then six times in the second. In the second inning, senior Nikki Bikovsky (Westport, Conn.), junior Kristen Hickey (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), senior Lexi Soucie (North Easton, Mass.), and junior Lindsay DelGrego (Wallingford, Conn.) each had RBI singles.

An inning later Salve Regina got an RBI single from Bukovsky, a bases-loaded walk from sophomore Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.), RBI singles from freshman Emily Porto (Waldwick, N.J.), and junior Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.), and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Megan Guest (Meriden, Conn.) as well as a run which scored on an error.

Wentworth scored both of its runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) led off with a walk and went to second on a senior Kelsey Gorski (Killingworth, Conn.) single. An infield single from Wehrle loaded the bases and Rutkey scored on an error as junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice which moved Weymouth to second and Wehrle would go to third before scoring on an error.

Freshman Kaleigh Dwyer (East Brunswick, N.J.) improved to 3-4 on the season as she allowed zero earned runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out four. Galeazzi, Bukovsky, and Hickey each had two hits for the Seahawks.

Rutkey took the loss for the Leopards as she allowed 10 runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit. Wehrle and Gorski recorded hits for the Black & Gold.

Game Two:  Salve Regina 9, Wentworth 1 (5)
The Seahawks plated three runs in the first inning on a two-run RBI double from sophomore Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) and an RBI single from Kathios. An inning later Salve Regina made the score 4-0 when Galeazzi had an RBI double.

Salve Regina scored a pair in the third to up its lead to 7-1 as Kathios had a sacrifice fly and freshman Allie Gusmano (Orange, Conn.) drove in a run with an infield single.

Wentworth scored its lone run in the top of the fifth as Rutkey led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gorski. Wehrle followed with a single and, after Weymouth lined out, an errant throw on a double play attempt allowed Rutkey to score.

The Seahawks ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs as junior Courtney Nowicki (Northford, Conn.) had an RBI single and Galeazzi walked off with a two-run single.

DelGrego picked up the win (1-1), allowing an unearned run on four hits, walking one, and striking out three. Galeazzi was 4-for-4 with three RBI and Gusmano had three hits.
