Softball Falls Twice to Western New England

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) had five hits and drove in five runs to help the Western New England University softball team sweep Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at Carr Diamond. The Golden Bears won the first game, 12-2, and picked up a 9-0 win in the nightcap.

Game One:  Western New England 12, Wentworth 2 (6)
Western New England scored a pair of runs in its first at bat on an RBI single from freshman Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) and an RBI double off the bat of junior Jenn Luba (Plymouth, Conn.). An inning later the Golden Bears scored six times, including when Lavinio hit a three-run home run and Kistner followed with a solo home run.

Wentworth scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Junior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) reached on a two-base error and went to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Rebecca Wehrle (South Amboy, N.J.) followed with a double to plate Weymouth. Junior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) grounded out to move Wehrle to third and senior Kelsey Gorski (Killingworth, Conn.) sacrificed Wehrle home.

The Golden Bears scored a single run in the fifth on an RBI, ground-rule double from Lavinio, and added three more in the sixth on RBI singles from freshman Tori Fisher (Poestenkill, N.Y.) and junior Jen Zazzarino (Hopewell Junction, Vt.) and a double from senior Corianna DeLisi (Tuxedo, N.Y.).

Junior Emily Cramer (Stoughton, Mass.) picked up the win (4-10) in relief as she allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits in three innings. Kistner started and pitched three perfect innings, striking out five batters. She also helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. DeLisi was 3-for-4 two RBI while Fisher and junior Lindsay Williams (Coventry, Conn.) had two hits each and Lavinio was 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Sophomore Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) took the loss in 1.1 innings. Classmate Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) pitched the final 4.2 innings. Wehrle had two hits and an RBI while junior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) and freshman Haley Hohlmaier (Johnston, R.I.) each had hits.

Game Two:  Western New England 9, Wentworth 0 (5)
The Golden Bears received all the runs they would need in the first inning, scoring three times in the opening frame. With runners on second and third, Kistner reached on a sacrifice fly which turned into a two-base error and scored both runners and Luba had an RBI single.

Western New England added a pair in the second on a two-run single from Kistner and scored four more times in the third on RBI singles from DeLisi and Williams, an RBI double from Lavinio, and Kistner's second sacrifice fly of the game.

Senior Samantha DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) picked up the win (4-1), allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one in three innings. Freshman Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) pitched the final two innings, walking one and striking out three. Lavinio was 3-for-4 while Williams and senior Katie Wood (Westport, Mass.) each had two hits. Kistner drove in four runs.

Rutkey took the loss in an inning of work while Norquist pitched the final four innings. Rutkey also had Wentworth's lone hit of the game. Gorski and Hohlmaier each drew walks.

Wentworth hosts Wheelock on Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.
