NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Leopards fell to Mt. Aloysius 15-1, before falling to Mary Baldwin 6-3.
GAME ONE – Mt. Aloysius 15 Wentworth 1 (Five Innings)
The Leopards were first to strike against the Mounties, as senior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) reached first on an error, and landed on second after a stolen base. Freshman Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) moved Weymouth over to scoring position, before sophomore Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) drove Weymouth home on a groundout for the 1-0 lead.
Mt. Aloysius was quick to respond, and answered with four straight multi-run innings, including seven runs in the fourth inning alone.
Senior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) swung into her second double in three games, while DiPilato drove home the Leopards' lone run, her fifth so far this season.
After pitching a complete game and her first collegiate win in yesterday's opener, freshman Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) dropped to 1-1 on the hill for Wentworth, allowing six earned runs in 4.0 innings tossed, while striking out two.
GAME TWO – Mary Baldwin 6 Wentworth 3
After three straight innings of scoreless play, Wentworth broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth, when senior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) singled to left to score freshman Ilyssa Creamer (Pittsfield, Mass.) on the play for the 1-0 lead. DiPilato continued her strong performance at the plate, and roped a deep double to left to extend the Leopards' lead 3-0.
The Fighting Squirrels rallied in the fifth inning, and erased the three-run deficit with three quick singles to knot the score 3-3. Mary Baldwin swung into its fourth of six total hits in the inning, a double down the left field line, and took its first advantage of the game 4-3. The Fighting Squirrels continued to work the plate, and tacked on three final runs for the 6-3 final.
Myers suffered her second loss on the mound for Wentworth despite five strikeouts in the effort.
The Leopards enjoy a day of rest tomorrow before returning to action on Thursday for a doubleheader with La Roche and Eureka.
