Roger Williams Snaps Softball's Win Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute Technology softball team snapped a five-game winning streak, falling to Roger Williams University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Carr Diamond.

The Leopards drop to 7-14 overall and 0-6 against league opponents, while the Hawks climb to 4-16 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Game One – Roger Williams: 12 Wentworth: 0 (Six Innings)

The bats were popping from the visiting squad, as Roger Williams collected 17 hits, including four multi-base performances. Senior Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) started with a leadoff double to center, before junior Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) put runners on second and third for sophomore Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.). Romano belted a singled down the left field line, scoring both Pohl and Ledbetter on the play for the 2-0 lead.

The Hawks added at least one run in each inning excluding the fourth, including a four-hit, two-run effort in the top of the third. Sophomores Tara Chatowsky (North Kingston, R.I.) and Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingston, R.I.) drove home both runs in the stretch, while Romano, freshman Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.), and senior Valerie Moran (Syosset, N.Y.) also recorded a hit in the stretch.

Down 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Wentworth junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) roped a leadoff double to left, and moved over to third on a groundout from freshman Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.). With Shea in scoring position, junior Emily Winter (Stratford, Conn.) swung into a hit to the pitcher, but solid defense from Murray and third baseman Taylor Chatowsky caught the lead runner and kept the hosts scoreless. The Hawks added five runs in the sixth to secure the shutout, including a two-RBI single from Tara Chatowsky.

Three Hawks roped a double in the effort via Ledbetter, Moran, and Tara Chatowsky. Ledbetter additionally belted a triple to left center and went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Tara Chatowsky led all players with four RBI's in the win.

Shea, Weymouth, and Willcutt all registered a hit for the Leopards in the deficit.

Sophomore Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) tossed 5.0 innings on the hill, and earned the win with zero earned runs, and scattered just three hits. Freshman Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) pitched 1.0 innings of relief for Roger Williams. DeMedeiros suffered the loss on the mound for Wentworth, allowing 12 earned runs and 17 hits.

GAME TWO – Roger Williams: 10 Wentworth: 2 (Six Innings)

The Hawks carried momentum into the nightcap, and belted 15 hits to Wentworth's seven. Roger Williams started the offense early, as Ledbetter and Romano led off with back-to-back singles to center. Goria cracked a deep single to the right side, scoring Ledbetter on the play, before Tara Chatowsky drove in Romano with a sac fly to right to the 2-0 score.

Junior Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) pitched a no-run first inning, allowing a single hit to Willcutt, before the Hawks added another run in the top of the second. Junior Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.) led off with a single, and worked her way to third off a Wentworth miscue and a sacrifice bunt from junior Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.), before an RBI single plated Boulter for the 3-0 lead. With two outs down, Taylor Chatowsky singled to short, scoring Goria to build a 4-0 advantage.

The Leopards got two back in the bottom of the third, as Shea led off with a deep single to left. Senior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) moved Shea to second a groundout, before Willcutt drove Shea in with a single to right, leaving runners on first and third. Myers laid down a textbook bunt, scoring Winter on the play for the 4-2 score, but sharp defense from the Hawks turned a double play to halt the hosts' scoring.

Roger Williams exploded for four hits and four runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach, as Pohl and Tara Chatowsky each drove in two runs. Moran and Malvinni drove in the remaining runs for Roger Williams in the sixth, dropping the Leopards in six innings by the eight-run rule.

Ledbetter, Goria, and Moran each roped a double for Roger Williams, while seven Hawks recorded an RBI, led by three from Tara Chatowsky.

Willcutt went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Leopards, and drove in a run, while Myers recorded an RBI of her own.

Prechtel pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and four hits with two K's. Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, and scattered three hits with zero runs and one strikeout. Myers took the loss on the hill for Wentworth, allowing 15 hits, six earned runs, and two walks.

Wentworth is back in action on Friday at Gordon.
