Curry Takes Two From Softball

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth softball team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader to Curry College on Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Colonels improve to 8-17 overall and 7-11 in the CCC, while the Leopards dip to 9-21 this season and 1-13 in league games.

Game One – Curry: 3 Wentworth: 0

The Colonels added one run in the fourth, and two in the sixth, while senior pitcher Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) kept the Leopards scoreless with seven strikeouts, allowing just three hits. The Leopards recorded their first hits in the second and fourth innings from freshman Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) and freshman Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.), but were both left on base before Curry added its first run.

Lambert led off with a single to center, but was out on the next play as senior Rachel Willcutt (Tilton, N.H.) tagged second to send the lead runner back to the bench with senior Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) on first. A deep double to left moved Oatway over to third, who was brought home on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Leopards were unable to connect with the bats in the next two innings, before Curry put the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth. The Leopards defense kept Curry at bay until freshman Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) cracked a two-RBI single with two outs down.

DeMedeiros, Myers, and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) each recorded a hit for Wentworth in the loss.

The Colonels belted nine hits, led by a double and a 2-for-3 showing at the plate from freshman Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.), while Lambert, Lloyd, and senior Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) all swung into two hits apiece.

DeMedeiros took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and three runs (one earned) with three K's. Lambert fanned seven batters and allowed just three hits in the win.

Game Two – Curry: 11 Wentworth: 0 (Five Innings)

The bats were popping for the home team in the nightcap, as the Colonels pushed eight runs across in the first inning, and held Wentworth to just one hit. Perzan highlighted the day with a homerun, while Lloyd swung into a double to round out multi-base performances for the Colonels. Perzan led the Colonels with five RBI, while freshman Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.), Lambert, Oatway, and Lloyd each drove home at least one run in the win.

Shea registered the lone hit for the Leopards in the loss.

Freshman Alex Kielty (Middleboro, Mass.) took the loss with four runs – all earned – with two walks. Myers came in for relief with nine hits and six earned runs, with two walks.

Curry senior Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) earned the win on the hill, scattering just one hit with two K's.

Wentworth is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader vs. Nichols. The Leopards will honor their three graduating seniors before first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
