Myers Walks Off With Nightcap Win; Seals Sweep For Softball On Senior Day

BOSTON. Mass. –  Wentworth Institute of Technology softball freshman Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) roped a walk-off double to center field in the ninth inning to seal a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) sweep against Nichols College on Sunday afternoon at Carr Diamond.

The Leopards, who earn their first sweep against the Bison since 2004, move to 11-22 overall and 2-13 in league play, while the Bison drop to 13-16-1 overall and 6-11-1 in conference.

Game One – Wentworth: 2 Nichols: 0

Freshman pitchers Alex Kielty (Middleboro, Mass.) and Kayla DeMedeiros (So. Dartmouth, Mass.) combined for a seven-inning shutout, each scattering just two hits apiece. The Leopards added their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, as senior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) hit a leadoff single to right and worked her way over to third. Sophomore Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) scored Weymouth with her team-leading 23rd RBI of the season, before DeMedeiros and senior Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles to juice the bases. A wild pitch from Nichols sophomore pitcher Alexis Ferris (Holyoke, Mass.) – who previously tossed a no-hitter against the Leopards last season – advanced all runners to build a 2-0 lead for Wentworth.

The Nichols showed resilience in the top of the seventh inning, as sophomore Taylor McIntosh (West Babylon, N.Y.) worked a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. A single from sophomore Cara Mayhew (Brooklyn, Conn.) bumped McIntosh over to third, as freshman Jessica Soucie (Athol, Mass.) subbed in to pinch hit. With no outs down, Soucie popped up to first base, as Myers was there to make the catch, and caught Mayhew off the bag for a crucial double play. DeMedeiros struck out the final Bison batter, giving the Leopards their first win against Nichols since 2009.

Kielty earned the win in 4.0 innings tossed, while DeMedeiros preserved the lead for Wentworth in 3.0 innings of relief. Ferris fanned eight batters in the loss for Nichols, and scattered six hits with two earned runs, while walking two.

Game Two – Wentworth: 2 Nichols: 1 (9 Innings)

It took extra innings for either team to get on the board, as Nichols was first to strike in the eighth when senior Kasey Ayer (Niantic, Conn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score sophomore Erin Kelley (Dighton, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead. The Leopards got one back in the bottom of the inning however as DeMedeiros drove home sophomore Molly Biega (Old Lyme, Conn.) to send both teams back to the plate.

The Leopard defense kept Nichols off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth, before junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) sent Berryman to scoring position with a textbook bunt down the left field line. Myers then sealed the sweep with a deep double to left center for the 2-1 walk off win.

DeMedeiros earned the win in the circle for Wentworth with a complete game, allowing six hits, and one run (zero earned), with six K's. Freshman Shannon Morin (Pelham, N.H.) suffered the loss for Nichols with nine hits, two runs (zero earned) and two walks.

Wentworth is back in action on Tuesday for a CCC matchup at Endicott.
