Softball Drops Season Opener to Cedar Crest

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped its season opener to Cedar Crest College, 6-3, on Saturday evening at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach.

Several Leopards took their first collegiate starts in style, as freshman Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) went two-for-four with a pair of runs scored, including the first of the game. Pina swung into a deep single down the right field line, and worked her way to third after a base hit from classmate Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.). Pina crossed home after a pitch flew past the Falcons' catcher to give WIT a 1-0 lead after one.

Cedar Crest fired back in the bottom half of the inning, adding three runs in the first four at-bats.  The Falcons tacked three more on in the bottom of the third, while Wentworth stole two back in the fourth and seventh, respectively.

Sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) joined Pina with two hits, both doubles, as Wentworth's lone extra base hitter. DeMedeiros also tossed a full game on the hill and suffered the loss with four earned runs, while junior Rylee Rehders (Moreno Valley, Calif.) recorded Wentworth's only RBI.

With the second game canceled due to unplayable conditions, the Leopards return to the field tomorrow for an 11:30 a.m. game vs Mary Washington.
