Softball Powers Past Grove City, Falls to Rivier in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –  The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team went 1-1 in day four of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic Thursday afternoon, downing Grove City College 7-1, before falling to Rivier University 4-0.

Game One – Wentworth 7, Grove City 1

A season-high 10 hits powered Wentworth to a six-run win in the first game, four of which came in the very first inning. Freshman Katie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) started the charge with a single through the left gap, before classmates Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) and Sabrina Haarstick (Milford, Mass.) followed her lead. Junior Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) swung into a deep single to right for her first of three RBI's, as the Black & Gold led 2-0 after one.

Four runs in the second inning set the Leopards even further apart from the Wolverines, as a two-RBI single from DiPilato gave Wentworth a 6-0 advantage. Higgins drove in her second run of the day in the third for Wentworth's final runs of the game, while sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) was lights on in the circle, giving up just one run in the fifth inning. DeMedeiros struck out a season-high five batters in her first win of the season.

Higgins went 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Verreault went 2-for-3 with two runs and belted her third double in four games. DiPilato led the Leopards with three RBI's, as she and Haarstick also registered two hits apiece.

Game Two – Rivier 4, Wentworth 0

The Raiders held Wentworth to a single hit in the closing game, as Haarstick recorded the lone single. Raiders' pitcher Taylor Roswell struck out one and walked two to shut out the Leopards, while Rivier scattered seven hits on the day.

Wilks started in the circle for Wentworth and struck out three batters, before DeMedeiros struck out three more in four innings of relief.

Wentworth closes its southern swing tomorrow with a pair of games against Waynesburg and No. 9 Coe.
