Softball Splits Final Day Matchups in Myrtle Beach; Closes Spring Break with Historic Start

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Posting its best start to the season in program history, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team returns to Boston at 4-5 overall, after splitting with Waynesburg and #9 Coe on the final day of its spring break trip. The Leopards' four wins in Myrtle Beach marks the winningest performance in spring training dating back to 2010.

Game One – Wentworth 8, Waynesburg 5

In back-and-fourth fashion to open the day, the Leopards took control of the game in the fifth inning trailing 6-5, as freshman Katie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) led off with a deep single to right field. After a base hit to center by Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.), the Wolverines eliminated the lead runner, Verreault, before junior Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) worked a walk to load the bases for sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mas.). DeMedeiros belted a two-RBI single to right field, which gave the lead back to the Leopards, who then led by a 6-5 score.

Wentworth added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth, Verreault starting the charge with her first collegiate triple to right center field. Higgins then drove in the final run for Wentworth for the 8-5 score.

A season-high 12 hits carried the Leopards to the early morning victory, as Verreault continued to shine in her rookie season with a single, a double, and a triple. DeMedeiros and Higgins also went 3-for-4, with DeMedeiros knocking in a team-high four RBI's. Freshman Sabrina Haarstick (Milford, Mass.) went 2-for-4 while DiPilato rounded out Wentworth's offense with a base hit.

DeMedeiros also earned the win in the circle, evening her record to 2-2 with one strikeout.

Game Two – #9 Coe College 8, Wentworth 0 (Five Innings)

The 9th ranked Kohawks stayed undefeated in a shortened game to close out the trip to Myrtle Beach, holding Wentworth to just two hits, both by freshman Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.). Pina went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single and a double, her second of the week.
