Offense Erupts in Softball's Sweep over Newbury

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team powered past Newbury College by scores of 9-2 and 12-1 in the Leopards' home opener on Wednesday afternoon.

Game One – Wentworth 9, Newbury 2

The Leopards erupted in the sixth inning with seven hits and seven runs to break a 2-2 tie, starting with a leadoff single from freshman Brianna Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Senior Emily Winter (Stratford, Conn.) got on base with an error on an attempted sacrifice, before freshman Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) belted the game-winning triple, scoring both Beverly and Winter on the play.

The next nine batters reached base for the Leopards, as sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) kept the ball rolling with an RBI single to center field. Classmate Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) followed with a two-RBI single to center, before Winter drove home junior Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) for Wentworth's final run.

Freshman Sabrina Haarstick (Milford, Mass.) went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while DeMedeiros and Pina each had two hits on the day. DiPilato, Beverly, Verreault, Myers and freshman Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) each recorded a base hit.

Verreault earned her first collegiate win in the circle with five strikeouts and just two earned runs in a full game tossed. Hannah Besaw suffered the loss for Newbury with five earned runs, five walks, and five K's.

Game Two – Wentworth 12, Newbury 1 (Five Innings)

The Leopards ran away with the game early in the nightcap, pouring in 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Wentworth scattered seven hits in the frame, and quickly loaded the bases with a base hit from Beverly, while freshman Alyssa Lohr (Fairport, N.Y.) and Myers reached on a fielding error and a fielder's choice. While solid defense from Newbury retired the lead runner, Myers, Verreault belted a double on the next play for the 2-0 lead. Higgins, DeMedeiros, and DiPilato all swung into an RBI single to build the gap up 5-0, before Lohr crushed a two-RBI double in between two Nighthawk miscues for the 10-run lead.

DeMedeiros was solid in the circle for the Black & Gold, allowing just one earned run to cross while also playing shutdown defense with a sharp double play to end the contest. DeMedeiros moves to 3-4 overall in her sophomore campaign.

Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Friday with a doubleheader against Gordon on Sweeney Field. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
