BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team combined for 46 hits and 34 runs in a record-setting non-conference sweep at Mass. Maritime on Thursday afternoon.
With the pair of wins, the Leopards move to 12-17 overall for the most wins in a season since 2010 with two games left to play.
Game One – Wentworth 13, Mass. Maritime 1 (Six Innings)
Sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) allowed just three hits in the circle with three strikeouts and zero earned runs to back the Leopards to the opening non-conference victory. Sophomore Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) opened the scoring with her first collegiate triple in the second inning, scoring junior Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) who reached base with a leadoff single. Freshman Brianna Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) knocked an RBI single for the 2-0 score after two and a half innings.
The Leopards tacked on five runs across the next two innings, and exploded for a seven-hit, six-run sixth inning. Freshmen Sabrina Haarstick (Milford, Mass.) and Katie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) knocked in two RBI apiece, while DeMedeiros and Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in a single run in the frame.
Wentworth saw four players book three hits in the winning effort from Verreault, Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.), Beverly and DiPilato. Of the four hot hitters, all drove in at least one RBI as Beverly and Verreault led the pack with three. The entire starting lineup recorded at least one hit in the non-conference win, combining for 21 overall, which ranks third all-time in the Wentworth softball record books.
Game Two – Wentworth 21, Mass. Maritime 7 (Five Innings)
The Leopards set multiple records in the nightcap, including most hits in a game with 25 overall. The Black & Gold drove in 20 runs, which ties the all-time record, as both previous records were set on March 23, 2014 in Buzzards Bay.
Verreault tied the single-game individual record with five hits at the plate, two of which were doubles, and scored four runs with two RBI. Myers went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles, while Beverly and starting pitcher Aurora Wilks (Fruitport, Mich.) each belted their first collegiate triples. Pina and Higgins connected three times at the plate, while Wilks, Isabelle Frank (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Beverly, DiPilato, DeMedeiros had two hits in the triumph.
Wilks struck out two in the circle and earned the win on five innings tossed with five earned runs.
Wentworth concludes the regular season on Saturday at Salve Regina in a key matchup for postseason positioning.
