Softball Drops Pair at Emerson

BOSTON, Mass – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader Sunday, March 20, falling 7-2 and 9-1 at Emerson College.

GAME ONE: Emerson 7, Wentworth 2

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Wentworth Batting Leaders: Jess Rowe (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1R)
Wentworth Pitching Leaders: Erin Hancock ((L, 2-2), 5.1 IP, 5 ER, 7H, 3K)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After going down in order in the first, the Leopards fell behind on an unearned run for the Lions, who had a runner on second with one out following the play. But junior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) was able to set down the next two batters, limiting the damage to just one run.
  • Wentworth came back to take the lead in the top of the second. Following a pair of walks and a single, freshman Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) came through with a two-run single, giving the Leopards a 2-1 lead.
  • Both teams went down 1-2-3 in their next turns up to bat, but the Lions pushed a run across to tie it in the bottom of the third. After a walk and stolen base, a two-out RBI single by Calli Pratt (Dighton, Mass.), who drove in three runs on the day, tied it at two heading to the fourth. Pratt was strong in the circle as well, throwing a complete game while allowing just two hits on the day. She didn't allow a baserunner in either of the next two innings, but Hancock matched her, keeping Emerson off the board as well.
  • After the Leopards failed to score in the sixth, the Lions exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. A pair of singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. A walk and a sacrifice fly plated two runs to give Emerson a 4-2 advantage, and after an RBI single by Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.), Pratt drove in her third run with another sac fly. The Lions plated one more run after a wild pitch, putting them ahead by five. The Leopards couldn't match the offensive output in the seventh, dropping the first game 7-2.

Wentworth Pitching Leaders: Kayla DeMedeiros ((L, 2-1), 5 IP, 2 ER, 7H, 1K)

  • The Leopards took the lead in the top of the first, as senior Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in junior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) with an RBI double to put Wentworth ahead. Graduate student Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) was strong through the first three innings, allowing just two hits and keeping the Lions off the board.
  • The Leopards got baserunners on in both the second and third innings but were not able to add to their lead. An RBI single tied the game at one, then Sophia Cloonan (Spring Valley, Calif.) stepped up and delivered a two-run double to put the Lions ahead 3-1.
  • After Wentworth was unable to get anything going offensively in the fifth, Emerson added to its lead in the bottom of the inning. After a runner reached on an error, a sacrifice fly made it a three-run lead for the Lions, then Claire Overton (Wayne, Pa.) drove an RBI double to left-center to push the lead to 5-1.
  • The Leopards went down in order in the sixth, and Emerson took advantage and put the game away in their turn at bat. After an error allowed one run to score, a pair of bases loaded walks forced in two more runs to make it 8-1. The final run came across on a wild pitch, giving the Lions the eight-run lead they needed to close it out at 9-1.
