Leopards Fall on First Day of Daytona Beach Shootout, 80-34

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Saint Vincent College scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, cruising to an 80-34 victory over the Wentworth women's basketball team in both squads' first game of the 2010 Daytona Beach Shootout, played on the campus of Embry-Riddle University.

The Bearcats, who were among the teams receiving votes in the latest D3Hoops.com Poll, held the Leopards to under 10 points for the first 13:55 of the opening stanza while taking a lead by as many as 24 points.  Saint Vincent held a 47-13 lead at the break after holding Wentworth to 23.8 percent shooting and scoring 22 points off of 22 Wentworth turnovers.

An 11-4 run by Wentworth to open the second half trimmed the lead to 26 with 16 minutes remaining, but Saint Vincent countered with six straight points to stop the Leopards' momentum.

Senior guard Maria Baroffio (Butler, Pa.) led all scorers with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  Junior forward Brittany Sedlock (Northern Cambria, Pa.) had 18 points and nine rebounds, while freshman forward Ariel Rocco (Northern Cambria, Pa.) added 10 points and eight rebounds.  Sophomore guard Melissa Mansur (Pottstown, Pa.) had eight of the Bearcats' 23 steals.

Freshman forward Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, Mass.) scored seven points and had 10 rebounds for Wentworth, while senior forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) had six points and 13 rebounds.  Wentworth was held to 12-for-50 (24.0 percent) shooting and was outrebounded, 54-39.  The Bearcats also scored 30 points off 33 Leopard turnovers.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow.  Saint Vincent (8-1) faces Randolph-Macon at 9:00 p.m., while the Leopards (5-4) take on Catholic at 5:00 p.m.
