Suffolk Uses Second Half Surge to Defeat Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Chelsea Campellone (Fall River, Mass.) netted a career-high 30 points and added a career-high 17 rebounds to help pace the Suffolk University women's basketball team to a 65-49 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Rams improve to 6-3 overall while the Leopards end first semester play with a 4-5 record.

Neither team would score for the first 3:02 of the contest, a spell that was broken by senior Megan McLaughlin's (Southington, Conn.) three pointer. One of two free throws from Campellone and a jumper from senior Alessandra Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) tied the game with 5:24 left. Wentworth took the lead on the next possession on a senior Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) basket and would lead by as many as five on two occasions, including when senior Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass) hit three free throws at the end of the first quarter to make it 15-10.

Two consecutive baskets from sophomore gave the Leopards a 19-10 lead early in the second quarter and Sabino would give Wentworth its largest lead of the game when she converted a layup with 3:48 left to make it a 30-18 contest. A pair of Suffolk free throws knocked the lead to 10 before Rogers put Wentworth back up by a dozen with 2:52 left.

Suffolk closed the half on an 8-0 run, capped off by a three pointer from junior Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H.) with 10 second left, which made it a 32-28 contest at the break.

McLaughlin and Rogers scored for Wentworth to open the second half and a three pointer from sophomore Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) made it 39-32 with 6:11 left. However, the Rams answered with a 14-2 run to close out the quarter and took a 46-41 lead. The run extended to 18-2 to open the fourth quarter, and, despite Wentworth coming within seven twice, the hosts sealed the win with a 9-0 run late in the game.

In addition to Campellone, junior Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Caitlyn Caramello (Revere, Mass.) scored 10 points apiece. Caramello also added 10 rebounds.

Rogers finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, Sabino added 12 points and five rebounds, and Camara had 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.

Wentworth is idle until playing at Western New England on January 5.
