BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Sierra Doucey (Poway, Calif.) had 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks to help pace the Emerson College women's basketball team to a 79-46 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest Wednesday night.
With the win the Lions improve to 7-3 while the Leopards close out first semester play with a 2-8 record.
Junior Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Pa.) gave Emerson a 2-0 lead before junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) evened the score with a layup with 7:54 left in the opening quarter. The Lions broke the tie with seven straight points, taking a 9-2 lead on a sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) jumper with 4:44 remaining and a three pointer from freshman Leena Kardacz (Harleysville, Pa.) gave the hosts a 13-10 lead with 1:13 left. A 6-0 Wentworth run, capped off by one of two free throws from freshman Samantha Madden (Plainville, Mass.) made it a 13-0 game, however Emerson scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 17-10 lead.
Holding the Leopards to just 2-of-13 shooting in the second quarter, the Lions outscored the Black & Gold 22-7 in the quarter. Emerson used a 19-0 run to open the quarter, taking a 32-12 lead on a senior Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) three pointer with four minutes left. Wentworth scored its first points of the quarter on its next possession on a jumper from senor Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.). Emerson led by as many as 24 late in the quarter and had a 22-point lead at the half.
A layup from Doucey opened the third quarter and extended the lead to 24. However, Wentworth scored the next five points, which came on a three pointer from freshman Maya Spence (Georgetown, Mass.) and a jumper by Sabino. Emerson countered with a 7-0 run to up the lead to 26, and, after leading by as many as 28 in the quarter, had a 54-31 lead after three quarters.
Emerson extended its lead with a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter and never looked back as the Lions shot over 55 percent from the floor in the frame.
Ducey was one of three Emerson players to score in double figures as Horan added 12 points and junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) had 10 points (on 5-for-6 shooting) and dished out six assists.
Sabino led Wentworth with 12 points to go along with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore Baylor Johnson (Greer, S.C.) had eight points, Spence added seven points, and Messer had five points and nine rebounds.
