Fast Start Pushes Western New England Past Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to pace the Western New England University women's basketball team to its eighth straight win with an 83-45 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Thursday night.

With the win the Golden Bears improve to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in CCC play while the Leopards drop to 2-10 (0-5).

The visitors led wire-to-wire, holding Wentworth to just four points in the first quarter and taking a 24-4 lead at the end of the opening frame. Anderson was one of three Western New England players to score four points in the quarter, along with seniors Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) and Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.).

Both teams shot well in the second quarter with the Golden Bears connecting on an impressive 85.7 percent of their shots and the Leopards shooting 53.3 percent. An 18-4 Western New England run over a five-minute span swelled the lead from 18 to 32 points and the Golden Bears led, 57-21, at the break. Olson had seven points for the visitors while sophomore Baylor Johnson (Greer, S.C.) had five for the Leopards.

Western New England opened the third quarter by extending its lead to as many as 46 on an Anderson three pointer and would lead by 42 after 30 minutes of play. The fourth quarter saw the Leopards hold the Golden Bears to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Olson added 11 points of 4-of-5 shooting to go along with three rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Young scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out four assists. Western New England had a 48-23 rebounding advantage.

Junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) scored 10 points for Wentworth while freshman Emily Magasic (West Milford, N.J.) added nine and Johnson had eight. Senior Kellie Messer (Hollis, N.H.) had six rebounds and six assists.

Wentworth hosts Roger Williams on Saturday.
