Roger Williams Soars Past Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) connected in 9-of-12 shooting from the floor for a game-high 20 points to help the Roger Williams University women's basketball team pick up its third straight win with a 65-34 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and 6-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-11 (0-6).

After Quilty opened the game with a basket, sophomore Baylor Johnson (Greer, S.C.) gave the hosts a 3-2 lead when she drained a three pointer on the next possession. However, the lead would be short-lived as Quilty ignited a 10-0 run, which was capped off by a senior Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) three pointer with 3:58 left in the quarter.

A Johnson three ended the run, however Roger Williams outscored Wentworth 9-3 over the remainder of the quarter to lead, 21-9, after 10 minutes of play. All of Wentworth's points came from behind the arc as, despite shooting 33.3 percent from the floor the Leopards were 3-of-4 from long range.

Quilty and junior Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) opened the second quarter with baskets for the Hawks before freshman Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) connected on Wentworth's fourth trifecta of the game. Quilty answered with a layup before junior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) hit two free throws, cutting the lead to 13 (27-14) with 5:39 left in the half. Roger Williams outscored Wentworth 12-6 to close out the half and led, 39-19, at the break.

Roger Williams' offense shot 50 percent from the floor in the third quarter and, defensively, the Hawks held the Leopards to 1-for-14 shooting, denying the Black & Gold of a comeback attempt.

In addition to her 20 points, Quilty had six rebounds and a pair of steals. Junior Stephanie Bramante (Stoneham, Mass.), Klis, and junior Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) had 10 points apiece to round out for players in double figures for the Hawks. Walther had six points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Johnson and Sabino led the Leopards with eight points apiece. Sabino also had eight rebounds. Sophomore Michelle McCloskey (Madison, Conn.) had six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Both teams are in action on Wednesday. Wentworth is at Curry while Roger Williams hosts Western New England in a battle of unbeaten teams in CCC play.
