BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped its final home game of the season to Western New England University, 69-43, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening inside Tansey Gymnasium.
The Leopards drop to 2-22 this season and 1-16 in the CCC, while the Golden Bears improve to 16-8 overall and 12-5 against league opponents.
Prior to tip-off, Wentworth honored its two seniors, Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) and Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) for their contributions to the program. We wish Haley and Courtney well in their future endeavors, and their presence on the court will truly be missed.
Wentworth hung with the visitors throughout the first quarter before WNE broke a 6-6 tie with a 7-2 run. Sabino knocked down a freebie to lead the Golden Bears 7-6, but sophomore Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) drained a three-pointer in between two jumpers from Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) and Emily Scurka (Billerica, Mass.) to lead 13-9 after the first quarter. Sophomore Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) made one from the line to extend the lead to seven with 5:16 left until halftime, but Wentworth scored five consecutive points to cut the score to a single possession, 18-16. Senior Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) then scored back-to-back threes for the Golden Bears and shut the doors on the first half on a 9-3 run, leading 27-20.
After freshman Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) put two points on the board for Wentworth to open the second half, WNE ignited a 10-0 run as the score showed 36-22 in favor of the visitors. Farrell and Junior Caroline Niland (Waltham, Mass.) combined for 10 points in the third frame, as the Golden Bears held a 48-29 advantage heading into the final ten, outscoring Wentworth 21-9. O'Neill gave WNE a 20-point cushion to open the final quarter, while sophomore Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) gave the Golden Bears their largest lead of the game, 63-39, with 4:49 left in regulation.
Freshman Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) led the Leopard offense with a game-high 16 points, while Sabino rounded out double-digit scoring with 13 points in her last game inside Tansey Gymnasium. Sabino also led the Leopards on the glass with seven rebounds, while Morton dished out a team-best six assists
Two Golden Bears reached double figures in scoring, paced by Farrell with 14 points. O'Neill finished with 13 points, including nine from behind the arc, while Carlson pulled down nine rebounds in the victory.
Wentworth concludes the 2017-18 season on Saturday at Nichols.
