BOSTON, Mass. – A balanced attack, spread across six student-athletes who scored seven or more points, paced the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team (3-7) to a dominant 65-49 triumph over the Mount Holyoke Lyons (2-12) in non-conference play Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two points from junior Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) kickstarted a 7-4 run the Leopards began the first quarter with before a basket by freshman Hannah Goen (New London, N.H.) cut the Lyons' deficit to 7-6. Back-to-back threes by junior Brianna Carroll and freshman Reagan Madonia (Corrales, N.M.) ignited a 10-0 run for Wentworth, who took a 17-6 lead before Mount Holyoke drained a three of their own. Another Carroll three and a basket by junior Brooke Carlson (Contoocook, N.H.) gave the hosts a commanding 22-9 lead after the opening quarter.
- The two teams swapped baskets for the majority of the second frame. A jumper by Amoddio gave Wentworth a 26-14 lead before the Lyons answered with two of their own. Junior Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) sank a layup to put the Black & Gold up 28-16. After a three by sophomore Kendall Maurer (Orinda, Calif.) later cut the deficit to 30-20, swapped layups by Goen and Carlson put the Leopards up 32-22 at the midway point.
- Just over midway through the third quarter, Wentworth took a 36-26 lead on a Carroll layup before freshman Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) cut Mount Holyoke's deficit to eight. Ahead 38-30, the Leopards sputtered off nine straight points, with three from Carroll and four from sophomore Tita Rana (Boston, Mass.) to take a 47-30 lead. The Lyons answered with a 7-3 run of their own to end the quarter down 50-37.
- After two Goff free throws cut the Lyons deficit by two, Amoddio and Maurer traded scores to mark a 52-41 score. Madonia and Goff traded scores before a Carroll three posted a 57-43 lead for the Leopards. Wentworth scored five straight, taking a 62-43 lead, before the two teams traded scores on free throws to give the Leopards a 65-49 win.
- Carroll led all scorers with 17 points, including four three-pointers. Amoddio added 12 while Foster scored 11, with the former also recording team-highs in assists (6), steals (4), and blocks (2).
