Women's Basketball Falls to Hartford
Hawks use a second quarter run to take the lead for good; Maddy Foster leads all scorers with 19 points

BOSTON, Mass. – Ava Naszimento led four student-athletes in double figures as the University of Hartford women's basketball team posted a 60-46 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Conference of New England action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Hawks improve to 9-12 overall and 7-7 in CNE play. The Leopards, who got a game-high 19 points from Maddy Foster, are 2-19 (0-14).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Ella Marchesani opened the game with a three pointer, Taylor Garabedian match that, tying the game at 3-all with 7:30 left in the quarter. The Hawks took a 7-3 lead, however, Garabedian made a layup with 4:46 left to cut the lead to five. A layup from Marchesani and two free throws from Lauren Sabia made it 11-5. The Leopards responded with seven straight points – four from Foster – to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Twenty-two seconds into the second quarter, Marchesani made a layup to put Hartford back on top. Brianna Carroll buried a three 14 seconds later to put the Black & Gold on top, 15-13. After Maya Okoro made a jumper, Gabby Amoddio hit a pair of free throws to put Wentworth back on top, 17-15. A layup from Okoro tied the game at 17-all run that saw the Hawks lead, 22-17, with 5:54 left. Amoddio pulled the hosts back within two when she hit a three and, after Naszimento made a jumper to push the lead to four (24-20), Foster scored four straight points to tie the game at 24-all with 3:33 left. A 10-0 run by the Hawks made it 34-24 at the half.
- Hartford extended its lead to 16 with 6:40 left in the third quarter on a layup from Emma O'Hare and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the quarter. With 12 seconds left, Maddie Gaynor hit two from the charity stripe to make it 42-3, however, a three from Sabia with four seconds left pushed the lead to 45-32.
- Wentworth came within 11 on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter, including when Foster made a three pointer with 5:19 to play, and, again, when Carroll knocked down two free throws with 67 ticks left.
- In addition to her 17 points, Naszimento grabbed 10 rebounds. Sabia scored 12 points, while Marchesani and Okoro added 10 apiece.
- Amoddio also scored in double figures for Wentworth, tallying 12.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today was the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams.
