Women's Lacrosse Downed by Gordon

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) scored five times while freshman Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) and junior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) each scored four goals and assisted on three others to help pace the Gordon College women's lacrosse team to a 17-9 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

The Fighting Scots scored the first two goals of the game, coming in a span of 1:09, as freshman Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Blomberg tallied markers. The Leopards trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on a senior Lisa Piccirillo (Islip, N.Y.) goal with 23:28 to play.

From there, Gordon went on an 11-1 run to close out the half and led, 13-2, at the break. Fitzgerald scored four times, while Blomberg and Castelline netted three apiece and junior Jane Dietrich scored once. Piccirillo scored the lone Leopard goal during that stretch.

Gordon used goals from Fitzgerald and Grinnell to open the second half and take a 15-2 lead with 23:24 left. Piccirllo's third of the game made it 15-3 with 21:03 left before Grinnell and Castelline scored for the Fighting Scots.

The Leopards finished the game on a 6-0 run over the final 15:06 with senior Liv Gardner (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Alexandrea Banks (Ellington, Conn.) scoring two goals apiece and seniors Mirela Baric (Burlington, Vt.) and Meg Ferro (Syracuse, N.Y.) netting a goal apiece.

Sophomore Olivia Balloveras (Freeport, N.Y.) had three assists for Gordon, with Hawkins adding two assists and Dietrich finishing with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Abby Illian had five draw controls, Fitzgerald added four draw controls and five ground balls, and Blomberg added three draw controls. Junior Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) made four saves in 30 minutes of action while sophomore Juianne Fitzpatrick (Rochester, N.Y.) made six stops in 24:44. Freshman Ari Karabashian (Ventor, N.J.) allowed one goal over the final 5:16.

Piccirillo finished with three goals for the Leopards while Banks and Gardner had two apiece. Banks and Baric won three draws each, while freshman Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.), who made seven stops, picked up four ground balls.

Gordon finished with a 33-20 shot advantage and 16-12 draw control advantage. Wentworth held a slight edge in ground balls, 18-17.

With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in CCC play. Gordon hosts the University of New England on Wednesday. Wentworth falls to 1-6 (0-4) and is at Curry on that same day.
