MILTON, Mass. – Junior Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) scored five goals to pace a balanced offensive attack as the Curry College women's lacrosse team won its second straight game with a 20-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.
The visiting Leopards wasted little time, scoring 26 seconds into the game on a goal from sophomore Julie Azzinaro (Westerly, R.I.). However, the Clonels would tally the next eight goals, with three coming from Carey and two from senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.).
Wentworth ended the drought on a goal from sophomore Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) with 12:54 left before two goals from junior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) scored two goals and Carey and junior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) added one apiece to put the hosts ahead, 11-2. Senior Lisa Piccirillo (Islip, N.Y.) scored with 6:58 left to make it 12-3, however Curry closed out the half with three goals and led, 15-3 at the break.
The Colonels scored the first four goals of the second frame before Houghton scored with just over 12:00 left. After the Colonels scored with 6:10 left, Houghton completed the scoring with nine ticks left.
Brickey tallied four goals and three assists while Bottary had three goals and four assists and Monfredo added three markers. Brickey also had 10 draw controls, eight ground balls, and seven caused turnovers. Sophomore Christina Wells (Peabody, Mass.) made two saves in just under 20 minutes of wrk to pick up the win, with freshmen Annie Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) and Kelton Vuilleumier (Duxbury, Mass.) turning aside three and two shots, respectively.
Houghton scored three of the Leopards' five goals, while senior Meg Ferro (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Pam Mudge (Pembroke, N.H.) had two assists apiece. Houghton, who won five draws, picked up 10 ground balls. Freshman Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) made nine saves.
Curry held a 38-14 edge in shots and a 42-24 advantage in ground balls.
The Colonels (9-3, 2-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference) is at Nichols on Saturday while Wentworth (1-7, 0-5) plays its final home game of its inaugural season against Western New England on Tuesday.
