Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Western New England

BOSTON, Mass. – Six different players recorded two goals, including freshman Brooke Kummick (Granby, Conn.) who also added three assists as the Western New England University women's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 19-12, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

The Golden Bears, who won their third straight contest, scored the game's first 10 goals – all coming in the first 14:09 of play. Sophomores Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bella, Pa.) and Kaitlynn Stevens (Stratford, Conn.) scored a pair of goals each during the opening run.

Wentworth received a pair of first-half markers from sophomore Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) and a goal from senior Lisa Piccirillo (Islip, N.Y.), however trailed, 15-3 at the break.

The Leopards scored the first three goals of the second half, with two coming from freshman Pam Mudge (Pembroke, N.H.) to cut the lead to 16-6 and would outscore the visitors by a 9-3 margin over the final 30 minutes of play.

Thirteen different Golden Bears recorded at least one point with freshman Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scoring two goals and two assists and graduate student Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), Stevens, Scannapieco, and senor Julienne Green (Brightwaters, N.Y.) scoring two goals and an assist each. Scannapieco also won six draws for Western New England. Sophomore Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) made four saves in 30 minutes of action, while sophomores Melissa Perry (Somers, Conn.) and Sarah Stevens made five and two saves, respectively, in the second half.

Houghton and Mudge had four goals and two assists apiece for the Leopards, with sophomore Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) picking up six ground balls. Classmate Alexandea Banks (Ellington, Conn.) won three draw controls and caused three turnovers. Freshman Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) made 12 saves.

With the win Western New England improves to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in CCC play. Wentworth falls to 1-8 (0-6). Both teams step out of conference on Thursday with the Golden Bears traveling to Lasell and the Leopards playing at Regis.
