Fast Start Pushes Roger Williams Past Women's Lacrosse

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team utilized a quick start to soar past the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology.  The Hawks improve to 6-9 overall and 4-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and the Leopards drop to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the CCC.

The Hawks scored six straight goals to start the game.  Lauren Piotrowski (Wakefield, Mass.) was first to hit net for the Hawks at 29:11.  Devin Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) put Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass.) in position to score at 25:55 for the Hawks second score.  Danielle Neagle (Avon, Conn.) marked her first goal less than 30 seconds later to put the game at 3-0.  Machette added her second assist of the day feeding Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn.) for her first score at 22:04. Piotrowski took matter into her own hands for her second goal at 21:07.  Kelsey Rahilly (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) and Jessica Searl (Glastonbury, Conn.) joined the action for their first assist and goal respectively to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.

Wentworth scored the next two goals before the Hawks would go on a seven goal run. Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) and Pam Mudge (Pembroke, N.H.) scored unassisted goals at 12:54 and 11:09 to put the Leopards on the board.

Mackenzie Logan (Sussex, N.J.) earned the next draw control and broke from midfield on a fast break dishing to Pingree for the finish at 10:54.  Pingree grabbed the next draw control and fed Machette for the score at 10:40.  Piotrowski then picked up Julie MacVane (Hampton Falls, N.H.) in front of the goal at 8:46 for her first score of the day and Put the game at 9-2.  Davenport got her second mark on a pass from Rahilly at 7:44.  Stephanie Fogg (Norwood, Mass.) was the next to benefit from Rahilly set up skills at 5:39 to put the game at 11-2.  Neagle added another at 5:06 and Searl connected with Davenport just before half to conclude the first half scoring 13-2.

The second half opened with the Hawks scoring three unassisted goals before Mudge hit for the Leopards at 17:50.  Piotrowki scored her third and fourth at 28:30 and 22:54 and Pingree chipped in another at 18:14.  Neagle would score the next four for the Hawks on passes from Logan, Rahilly and Piotrowski.

The Hawks had advantages in shots (48-22), ground balls (15-10), and draw controls (15-10).

Haley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) stopped 15 shots in the loss and Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) saved 13 shots in the win.

The Leopards return to action on Wednesday, April 24th at 4:30 p.m. in Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina.

The Hawks return to Bayside Field on the campus of RWU on Wednesday, April 24th for a non-conference match up with Keene state at 7:00 p.m.
