Women's Lacrosse Picks Up First Win of Season

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Sophomore Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) netted a hat trick and a pair of assists for five points to lead Wentworth to a 12-10 non-league college women's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Leopards (1-1) overcame a one-goal halftime deficit by scoring four of the first five goals after intermission, as Mudge's free position marker with 18:26 remaining staked Wentworth to a 10-8 lead.  Sophomore Janine Prokscha's (Washington, Conn.) free position tally just 52 seconds later enabled the host Buccaneers (0-1) to creep back to within one, but junior Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) restored the visitors' two-goal edge with just over 12 minutes to play.  Freshman Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) again sliced Massachusetts Maritime's deficit to one just 46 seconds after Houghton's goal, but that was as close as the hosts would come, as freshman Molly Dufresne (Plaistow, N.H.) completed her first collegiate hat trick on a free position conversion with 3:27 remaining to ice the Leopards' triumph.

Wentworth jumped out to a trio of two-goal advantages in the opening 24 minutes of action, as junior Alexandrea Banks's (Ellington, Conn.) marker with six minutes to play in the half gave the Leopards a 6-4 lead.  The Buccaneers tallied three times in the final 2:18 before the break in taking their second and final edge of the day (7-6), setting the stage for the visitors' early second half surge that featured two goals each from Mudge and junior Julie Azzinaro (Westerly, R.I.), who finished the day with three points.

Banks joined Mudge and Dufresne in collecting hat tricks in the win for Wentworth, while senior Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) netted a match-high four goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of goals and an assist from Murphy as well as two tallies and a helper off the stick of freshman Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.).  Sophomore Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Buccaneers, who also received a helper off the stick of sophomore Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.).

Sophomore Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a 13-save effort, while sophomore Jenna Breault (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) made eight stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Leopards by a 29-24 margin in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Dudley, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Nichols in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Wentworth hosts Elms in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening in Boston that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
