BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Korinne Bohunsky (Eliot, Maine) tallied five goals, added one assist, and won 11 draw controls as the University of New England women's lacrosse team topped Wentworth Institute of Technology, 19-8, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday afternoon.
With the win the Nor'Easters improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-10 (0-4)
Two minutes into the first, Bohunsky put UNE on top 1-0, but freshman Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) made the game 1-all with a goal at 26:13. Junior Natasha Mary (Dover, N.H.) netted the go-ahead goal for UNE nearly one minute after Wentworth tied the game and started a 10-0 run for the Nor'easters to put the score at 11-1. Graduate student Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) tallied Wentworth's first goal in nearly 20 minutes to bring the score to 11-2. UNE upped the score to 12-2 on a goal by freshman Amber Jenkins (Harrison, Maine), but junior Brandie Holland's (Lynn, Mass.) marker with 26 ticks left in the first made the score 12-3.
Freshman Nicole Carvalho (South Kingston, R.I.) sent in UNE's 13th goal 40 seconds into the second half and was followed up by three more goals to give the Nor'easters a 16-3 edge. Glavin found the back of the net at 17:47 to make the score 16-4 which was followed by a goal from junior Carly Sheehan (South Kingstown, R.I.) to make it 17-4. Freshman Leah Cummins' (Plymouth, Mass.) marker at 10:11 cut the score down to nine at 17-6. UNE gained the 18-6 edge after Carvalho's marker at 9:29, but senior Pam Mudge (Hookset, N.H.) and Paradis made the score 18-8 with three minutes left. Lampron closed out the game with a goal with 47 seconds left and sealed the 19-8 win for UNE.
Along with Bohunksy, Carvalho scored three goals and two assists while Lampron tallied three goals, scooped up seven ground balls, and caused five turnovers. Senior Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) earned the win for UNE, while freshman Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) finished out the final 42:13 and had five saves.
Glavin led the Black & Gold with three goals, while Paradis followed up with two goals, one assist, scooped up three ground balls, won three draw control, and caused a pair of turnovers. Senior Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) played the first 42:50 and had 13 saves in the loss with freshman Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) saving one shot.
UNE held the advantage in draw controls (18-10), ground balls (29-21) and shots (38-17).
Both Wentworth and UNE are in action on Saturday. Wentworth heads to Endicott at 3:00 p.m., while UNE returns home to face Western New England at 1:00 p.m.
