NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) scored seven goals to help pace the Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference match-up Wednesday evening.
With the win the Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the season while the Leopards drop their season opener.
Mount Ida raced out to a 6-0 run before Wentworth got on the board off a goal from sophomore Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.). Just over a minute later the Mustangs made it 7-1 before freshman Julie Dam (Milford, Mass.) tallied her first collegiate goal to make it a 7-2 contest.
The Mustangs scored the final three goals of the opening half to take a 10-2 lead at the break. Kelly had four goals in the opening half.
After Kelly opened the second half with a goal, Paradis ended the Wentworth drought by scoring with 26:22 left. However, Mount Ida got the next four to open its lead to 15-3 before Paradis scored the game's final two goals, coming less than a minute apart.
Senior Nicole Pavao (Peabody, Mass.) had three goals and an assist while junior Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) had two goals and two assists. Kelly also won six draw controls.
Paradis finished the game scoring four of Wentworth's five goals. Junior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.), sophomore Natalie Wood (Holden, Mass.), and sophomore Caitlin McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) each caused two turnovers.
Freshman Jessica Henry (Wilbraham, Mass.) made 14 saves for the Mustangs while sophomore Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, NY.) made nine stops for Wentworth. Mount Ida had advantages in shots (33-29) and ground balls (17-14) while the teams each won 10 draw controls.
Wentworth heads to Hilton Head, S.C., next week for its annual spring break trip and will play Medaille and Wilkes.
