BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Olivia McCarrick (Millersville, Md.) scored eight goals – including netting the game-winning tally with 7:58 remaining – to lift the Gordon College women's lacrosse team to a 12-10 win over Wentworth Institute of technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-8 (0-4).
Sophomore Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) and senior Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.) gave Wentworth a 2-0 lead with goals 2:15 apart early in the first half before Gordon scored four of the next five goals, with two coming from McCarrick, and took a 4-3 lead with 22:04 left in the half.
Paradis and senior Anna Rourke (Hamilton, Mass.) traded goals which kept the Fighting Scot lead at one goal, however Paradis scored twice and Holland once which gave the Black & Gold a 7-5 cushion at the half.
McCarrick and senior MC Ashton (Greenwich, N.Y.) combined to open the half with three markers in a span of 1:21 for Gordon, giving the visitors an 8-7 lead. Goals from Paradis and sophomore Jenna Tetreau (Dudley, Mass.) gave Wentworth a 9-8 lead with 17:11 remaining, however two straight tallies from McCarrick gave the Fighting Scots a 10-9 lead.
With 8:23 remaining, Holland tied the score at 10-all when she scored off a free position shot. Just 28 seconds later McCarrick put the visitors ahead with her seventh goal of the game.
The Leopards had chances to tie the game, including late in the contest, however would turn the ball over which eventually led to an insurance goal from McCarrick with 59 ticks left.
In addition to her eight goals, McCarrick also had eight assists for a 10-point afternoon. She also picked up four ground balls, won three draw controls, and had a pair of caused turnovers. Rourke finished with three goals and three assists for six points while, in addition to scoring a goal, Ashton had three ground balls and four draw controls.
Paradis finished with six goals, one assist, nine ground balls, and five draw controls. Holland had three goals.
Sophomore Anastasia Landman (Cheswick, Pa.) made six saves in the second half to pick up the win. Freshman Melanie Dwyer (Reading, Mass.) made seven saves in the first half. Sophomore Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made nine saves for Wentworth. Shots were even at 27-all and ground balls were even as well, 26-26.
Both teams are in action on Saturday. Wentworth is at Curry and Gordon hosts Dean.
