Women's Lacrosse Falls in Home Finale

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.) scored five goals to help pace the Western New England women's lacrosse team to a 20-6 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Field.

With the win the Golden Bears improve to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-13 (0-7).

Canning was one of nine Western New England players to score multiple points in the contest which included freshman Lindsey Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists.

The Golden Bears scored the first seven goals of the contest with Phillips, Canning, and sophomore Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) scoring twice and graduate student Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) scoring once. Wentworth scored three of the next four goals as sophomore Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.), senior Brandie Holland (Lynn, Mass.), and sophomore Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) scoring for the Black & Gold. Paradis' marker, which came with 17:28 left, was the 45th of the season for her which breaks her own seasonal goal mark (44), set last season.

Western New England scored the final six goals of the first half and the first five of the second half to take a 19-3 lead. The Leopards got single goals from junior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.), Paradis, and freshman Marissa Nelson (Cranston, R.I.) before freshman Marissa Staffu (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) completed the day's scoring. Paradis' second marker of the game tied the program's all-time goal record as she now has 90 on her career.

Freshman Shannen Barrett (Rensselaer, N.Y.) had three goals, scooped up four ground balls, and won three draw controls. Norden finished with a pair of goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.

Paradis finished with two goals in addition to winning six draw controls. Webb had a goal and an assist, scooped up six ground balls, and caused two turnovers.

Junior Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) made four saves in the first half to pick up the win. Junior Madison Cutler (Pittston, Maine) made five saves in the second half. Sophomore Liz Gunning (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made five saves. Western New England had advantages in shots (33-20) and draw controls (16-12) while Wentworth had a 24-23 edge in ground balls.

Wentworth ends the 2017 season on Tuesday night at Roger Williams. Western New England concludes the regular season on Tuesday at home against Salve Regina.
