Women's Lacrosse Soars Past Maine-Farmington; Rolls to Fifth Straight Win

BOSTON, Mass. –  The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in its 2019 campaign, downing U. Maine-Farmington 19-4 on Sweeney Field Tuesday evening.

The Leopards wasted no time getting on the board, as two-time CCC Rookie of the Week Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) finished a feed from senior Jenna Tetreau (Dudley, Mass.) four minutes in for the 1-0 lead. The dynamic duo of senior Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) and sophomore Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) single-handedly rattled off eight straight goals, before UMF's Kayla Backman (South Portland, Maine) broke the drought for the Beavers with 8:58 left in the half.

Galan and Paradis gave the Leopards two more before the half, but the Beavers had an answer for each goal to prevent running clock for the time being. With 36 seconds to go before halftime, junior Shannon Sturtz (Littleton, Mass) converted on a free position shot to keep the clock running until the game's final buzzer, and the 19-4 final.

Galan paced the Leopard offense with six goals and one assist, while Rogers and Paradis each netted five goals in the winning effort. Joining Sturtz with a single tally was sophomore Alana Lauersen (York, Maine) and Tetreau, each scoring their first goals of the season.

Senior Rachel Schaeffer (Lumberton, N.J.) made her collegiate debut in the cage for the Black & Gold, and earned the win in net with four saves in just over 50 minutes of action. Kayla Gendreau came in for eight minutes of relief for Wentworth.

Backman scored two goals in the effort for the Beavers, while Keilly Lynch (Lyman, Maine) and Azure Illiano (Biddeford, Maine) rounded out the visitors' offense. Heather Boland (Griswold, Conn.) suffered the loss in net with five saves in first-half action.

Wentworth will hit the road for its next contest on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. contest at UMass Dartmouth.
