BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth women's lacrosse team outscored Curry College 9-8 in the second half, but couldn't overcome its first-half deficit, as the Colonels downed the Leopards 16-11 in conference action on Thursday afternoon.
After both teams traded opening goals, before Curry scored seven straight while holding Wentworth scoreless for over 20 minutes. Curry junior Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Andria Torres (Milford, Conn.) each scored twice, while sophomore Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.), junior Kayla Merritt (Attleboro, Mass.), and sophomore Allie Wysocki (Agawam, Mass.) netted a single goal apiece to give Curry an 8-1 lead with 2:42 left in the half.
The Colonels outshot the Leopards 22-12 over the first thirty minutes as freshman goalkeeper Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) stopped six of eight shots faced on net. Freshman Bella MacMahon (North Yarmouth, Maine) finally broke the drought for Wentworth with 14 seconds to go before halftime, finishing off a feed from sophomore Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.).
The Leopards' offense came alive in the second half, as senior Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) scored six goals (five unassisted) and brought the Black and Gold within four, 14-10 with 8:36 left in regulation. After another Parker tally, Paradis netted her final goal of the game with just over five minutes left to play, but Curry's strong first-half along with a final goal from Torres protected the lead for a 16-11 final.
Curry held a 17-12 advantage in draw controls as Parker led five players with multi-goal games. Parker netted four overall, while Torres, Dubel and Wysocki each scored a hat trick.
Paradis' seven goals led all players on the field, while classmate Jenna Tetreau (Dudley, Mass.) joined in with two goals. Freshman Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) and McMahon each scored once in the effort.
Sophomore Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made 14 saves in net for the Leopards, while Ginaitt earned the win with 11 saves.
Wentworth returns to Sweeney field for its next conference matchup on Saturday. The Leopards welcome the Bison of Nichols College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
